Edaran Modenas, the authorized distributor of the Kymco brand in Malaysia launched their latest offering the AK550 Premium in front of the media and guests with two color options being given at a base price of RM65,500. Mind you, that these bikes aren’t assembled here as they’re brought in as a CBU unit for the time being and no announcement during the launch for it to be localized.

The AK550 Premium is powered by a DOHC, two-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine in Crossplane configuration, displacing 550.4 cc. Power is claimed to be 50.9 hp at 7,500 rpm with 52 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm, going to the rear wheel via CVT gearbox and exposed belt drive.

The AK550 Premium came equipped as expected with a circular TFT-LCD screen, flanked by separate readouts on either side showing speed and other information such as engine status. Coming standard is Bluetooth connectivity to the rider’s smartphone for navigation, music, messaging and calls.

Other features on the AK550 Premium include an electrically adjustable windscreen, cruise control and smart key for keyless starts. The under seat compartment is claimed to be large enough to hold a full-face and open face helmet simultaneously which will be great for a 2-up riding for those looking at mid-range distance hero scooter to go about their daily life. (We’ve seen this a lot along the PLUS highways during commuting time to work here).

All in all, we believe the bike will gain it’s traction soon with deals and offering to be made in order to entice their target audience to put a booking on the bike. Pricing wise it’s a challenge when it come to the Modenas brand but this is an actual Kymco unit and they’re proven to be a global leading brand in such category.
